Rua, 27 years old, began his martial arts training at the age of fifteen by taking up Muay Thai lessons. At the age of seventeen, he began studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He has followed his brother Murilo when he started training at the Chute Boxing Academy. He is currently taking up lessons in wrestling and western boxing.
He started his fighting career by entering vale tudo matches. He then entered the International Fighting Championship's (IFC) "Global Domination" tournament. After he was defeated in a match against Renato Sobral, he went to Japan to join the Pride Fighting Championship. When Pride was bought by UFC, he also signed on. In a fight with Forrest Griffin, he re-injured his knee which was already hurt during his training before. He had elective surgery which forced him to drop out of UFC 85. He was offered a rematch with Mark Coleman in UFC 93.
